Welcome to the Joan Warner State Farm Agency in Farmington Michigan!

As the Weather starts to get colder keep these helpful pointers in mind:

When the weather turns cold, preparing your home can help keep it safe, warm, and energy-efficient. Here are some important steps to take:

  • Inspect and Service Heating Systems

    • Have your furnace, boiler, or heat pump serviced by a professional to ensure it’s working efficiently.

    • Replace filters in your heating system regularly.

  • Seal Windows and Doors

    • Check for drafts around windows and doors and use weatherstripping or caulk to seal gaps.

    • Consider using draft stoppers at the base of doors.

  • Insulate Pipes

    • Wrap exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas like basements or attics, with insulation to prevent freezing.

    • Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to prevent pipe bursts.

  • Check and Clean Gutters

    • Remove leaves and debris from gutters to prevent ice dams.

    • Ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation.

  • Prepare Your Fireplace or Wood Stove

    • Have chimneys inspected and cleaned to prevent fire hazards.

    • Stock up on firewood if you use a wood-burning stove or fireplace.

  • Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

    • Cold weather often means closed windows and more heating, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide buildup.

    • Replace batteries and test detectors to ensure they work properly.

  • Add or Improve Insulation

    • Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces to reduce heat loss.

    • Use insulated curtains or window treatments.

  • Reverse Ceiling Fans

    • Set ceiling fans to run clockwise on low speed to push warm air down.

  • Prepare for Power Outages

    • Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, and non-perishable food handy.

    • Consider a backup heat source if possible.

  • Outdoor Preparations

    • Drain and store garden hoses.

    • Protect outdoor faucets with covers.

    • Bring outdoor furniture and plants inside or cover them.

Taking these steps will help ensure your home stays comfortable and protected throughout the cold season.
